Why We Focus on Out-of-School Time: The critical hours that shape kids’ futures.

The hours before school, after school, and during school vacations play a powerful role in shaping kids’ futures. When school is out, learning doesn’t stop. Kids continue to learn through each social interaction with their peers and adults during out-of-school time. How those hours are spent can make a lasting difference.

Quality out-of-school programs provide safe, structured environments where youth can explore interests, build relationships, and grow confidence. Whether through sports, camps, arts, or other activities, these programs give kids opportunities to learn in ways that aren’t always possible during the school day.

For many low-income families on the Seacoast, out-of-school activities seem unattainable because of the high cost and other barriers associated with these programs. This leaves kids on their devices or left at home while their peers are out interacting with others in the community. When affordable programs aren’t available, low-income kids often miss out. Our mission closes that gap by connecting kids to scholarships and discounts for quality out-of-school programs offered by our partners.

When we focus on out-of-school time, we’re not just filling hours or finding ways to keep kids busy, we’re investing in potential. These moments outside the classroom help kids build the skills, confidence, and connections that carry them throughout their lives.
